Gijón (Asturian: Xixón), is a coastal industrial city and its municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain. Early mediaeval texts mention it as “Gigia”. It was an important regional Roman city, although the area has been settled since earliest history. The name was originally applied to a small peninsula presently referred to as Cimavilla, literally “top of village,” between two beaches, one of which has a recreational port today. The main port, one of the largest in the north of Spain, is called “El Musel“. Gijón has a barely growing population of approximately 277,000 (2006).

Asturies ye una Comunidá Autónoma del noroeste de la Península Ibérica dientro d’España. Llenda al oeste con Galicia, al sur con Castiella y Lleón y al este con Cantabria.

Alministrativamente ta dixebrada en conceyos y caltién el títulu de Principáu; anguaño, el Príncipe d’Asturies ye l’herederu de la Xefatura del Estáu d’España, siendo esti títulu una tradición que remanez del sieglu XIV.

Asturies tien un territoriu de más de diez mil quilómetros cuadraos, y una población, en retrocesu, que supera’l millón d’habitantes, que falen castellanu y asturianu. Na fastera occidental, na llende con Galicia fálase a fala de transición, ente l’asturianu y el gallegu, denomada pola ALlA como eonaviegu.

La so capital ye la ciudá d’Uviéu y Xixón ye la de mayor población. Avilés, Siero, Mieres o Llangréu son otros de los conceyos de más población.
